Page history last edited by Connnor 1 yr ago

Describe the history of political and cultural ramifications of the Slavophile vs. Westernizer philosophies in 19th Century Russia.

Definitions:

A Slavophile (-phile: the Greek root 'love') was a member of an intellectual movement from 19th century that wanted the Russian Empire to be developed upon values and institutions derived from its early history. Slavophiles were especially opposed to Western European culture and its influences in Russia.

The term Westernizer originally referred to 19th century Russian intellectuals who recognised a common historic destiny with the West. In Russian such people were known as the Zapadnik.
